Springtime in Brookyln

I actually had several blog entries lined up and was planning to do at least one of them today, but for the first time I can recall this year, the temperature was above 65 degrees, and it was sunny outside. One of the wonderful things about writing full time (and having an unemployed pregnant wife) is that you can take advantage of stuff like that. We got our chores done early, and then packed a snack and a water bottle and went to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. We took a car service there (it’s a five minute drive), then spent a couple hours walking around the spring foliage before strolling back home.

Of course, this means I’ll be up late tonight in order to meet my writing quota, but hey, you do what you gotta do.

Here are some pictures from today’s excursion:

Dani all full of baby in front of spring bloom.

Tiny flowers. We used a quarter to give them scale.

Me standing on the Isaac Asimov square of the celebrity walk. Is it a crime that I have never read an Asimov story? I guess not, since I write Fantasy and not Sci Fi, but still. A lot of industry people look down their nose when I fess up to it. I did see that Will Smith robot movie. Does that count?

After several attempts at using my camera’s auto-timer, a good Samaritan offered to take a picture of us. I’ve actually put on a lot of “winter weight” over the last few months, but standing next to a pregnant woman is a great way to mask it.

This was supposed to just be a picture of the fish in the mini-pond, but the reflection of the trees made for a nice effect.

  1. Pregnant Dani head on still looks skinnier than most non-pregnant women I know. You should hold a quarter next to her for proper scaling.

  5. You have taught me many years over our. . . wow. . .16 years? of friendship

One of them is this: That you can never appreciate the scale of a thing, unless you hold a quarter up next to it.

I tested this theory first next to the Blue Whale at Natural History, and have been at it ever since.

  6. As much as I agree with Myke and Matt, please don’t hold up a quater to Dani for proper scaling.

  7. This from the chick who holds quarters up to Yoda and the Death star.

  8. Ok, ok, I’ll admit it..that was the first of MANY “to scale” pictures I’ve participated in. However, I maintain that there are certain instances where the quarter gag isn’t a good idea.
