Bag End
Still not sure what to name this new studio. My old office was, perhaps a bit ostentatiously, referred to as “the Library”, since it has always been my dream to have a huge personal library with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves and a little ladder on wheels like Lex Luthor had in Superman the Movie. Of course, I would need a lackey to push me on the ladder, but first things first.
Right now the new place is being referred to as “the Studio”, “the office”, “next door”, and “the Hobbit-hole”. As any PR strategist will tell you, this is a bad idea. Clarity of message is essential. I’m open to suggestions for a final name. There’s a prize in it for anyone who comes up with a winner. If not, I may start using the title of this blog.
Here’s my latest progress report:
The Den of Demons
Creation’s Cavern
Too cheesy? Yes.
The Writer’s Block (as a preventative/ironic statement)
I Forgot (so whenever anyone asks what your studio is called you can annoyingly keep saying that…or have it as a password)
The Common Room
The Reservoir
SANCTUARY!
And that’s all I have for now.
Names are important.
And maybe that why I’m very bad at choosing them.
When I write a little story, and I have to name someone I always worry he/she/it won’t like it.
I admit it sounds stupid, but I can’t stop it.
I keep thinking about he/she/it, wether the choosen names fit them, if they like them or if it doesn’t sound to stupid calling them.
Just imagine your on a train, bus car or whatever, suddenly you hear trough the bus:
“Hey, Grazt, where are ya?”
It’s sounds not just stupid, but also wrong.
If you understand my..unusual thinking.
But why am I writing all that?
Honestly, I don’t know.
Maybe just to say this sentence:
You grow into a name.
So, if I were you, I’d name the apartment something like:
Bome….(BOok hoME)
and after working (well, you are going to write there) there for a certain timeperiod I’d discuss the name again.
Because then you – damn, this whole post just sound like I’m craty – *know* that room.
You know maybe everything aubout it.
Where you like to sit an imagine Arlen fighting the demons, or Reagen gotten a lecture from his wife.
And where you do the writing.
Where you may sleep ‘cauese it’s so tiring etc.
I guess I’ll stop talking (or writing) nonsene….
Good Night to everyone out there *smile*
The Warded (or Painted) Den.
The Sanctum Sanctorum.
The Holy of Holies.
The Refuge.
Tanelorn (if you’re a Moorcock fan, can’t remember if you are).
Peephole in my Office.
The Forge.
The Crucible.
Succor.
Love how everything’s coming together. Almost there!
I just wanted to say I recognised one of your books on your paperback shelf ‘The Way of Shadows’. It was a really interesting book. When I bought The Painted Man, I was really conflicted because I really wanted The Way of Shadows as well but could only get one. I actually stood in the shop holding both books thinking ‘demons or assassins’ repeatedly in my head for about 5min before I chose the demons. I made a good choice too. About 2 weeks later though, my sister bought The Way of Shadows anyway so I was happy =D I got to read two great books.
Ummm some names you can use…how about your Safe House? The Domain, The Oasis, The Writing Block/Room, yeah im not very creative haha. The Core/Hive maybe?
The Stedding or Peat’s Stedding or Stedding Brett
The Warded Room (noticed someone already said Warded Den – damn)
The Apothecary
Demon Haven
Writer’s Haven
The Asylum 🙂
Samantha, I liked The Way of Shadows, too. Brent Weeks and I have been chatting online, and he’s a really nice guy. We’re planning to finally meet up in person at World Fantasy later this month and get drunk together.
Everyone else, keep those great ideas coming! FYI, Neal’s “Stedding” suggestions reference a D&D game I ran in college. Neal, I just found my notes for it the other day!
Oh man, I just read the Way of Shadows trilogy, too. So, so good. As with the Warded Man, I was all boggled for a few days after I finished the books. It’s so neat that you’ll be hanging out with him.
In terms of office names….
The Core
The Attic
The DM Closet
The Book Brothel
The Anti-Anti Magic Zone
Peat’s Pocket Dimension
The Den of Many Things
The Grotto
The Hold or Peat’s Hold
Did you find character sheets? Randy’s min/max ranger?
Doesn’t that apartment share a wall with your current one? If so, I suggest you get a wardrobe and make a hidden door from your apartment to that one. Then you can call your new office “Narnia”.
That’s actually an awesome idea. I wish I’d thought of that.
Maybe someday. Right now I am broke and sick of remodeling. Just spent all day working on my daughter’s room and making improvements to the rest of our home apartment. After this I am hanging my swords and art, setting up the action figures, and then I am friggin’ done for a good long while..
It’s always hard to find a name for things, and usually I suck at it, but coming home this afternoon I was thinking about the contests, and I had a flash :
The Peat
or Peat’s Pit
:-p
OK maybe it’s just my french addiction for “jeux de mots” (I don’t know how you say that in english) but I found it kind of funny so I wanted to let you know 😉
I posted something earlier but it seems it didn’t work…
So, I said that I usually suck at names, but I had a flash driving home this afternoon :
The Peat
or Peat’s Pit
?

Jessica, your first comment was caught in my spam filter. I don’t know why, but I would have approved it relatively quickly. I check it all the time.
Google translates jeux de mots as “wordplay”, which can mean a lot of things, but I wonder if “pun” is the word you’re looking for?
Anyway, I dunno about Peat’s Pit. The office might get bogged down by a name like that. ^^
Oh OK, I’m sorry I posted another, I though it hasn’t work at all because I was redirected at to top of the page.
Yes, “pun” is the right word 🙂
Hehe, that’s clear a name like it calls for troubles
