You may have already guessed it, or heard about it on the twittface, but the other winner of the DSAC holiday contest was Karen from Rhode Island. She earned it:
Hi Peat – It’s your friend for RI here. Great contest! Let me explain to you why I deserve to be the winner of the Desert Spear ARC….
Today I hiked a 5-mile trail laden with a heavy backpack which included the Warded Man book, camera, and tripod. I hiked alone through the cold, snow, slush, and encountered several deer hunters. Luckily I was wearing my bright orange vest so I wouldn’t be shot! The destination of my hike was the Tri-State Marker. It is granite marker placed in the middle of the woods dated 1883 where the three states of RI, MA, and CT meet. I have attached a couple of pictures with different angles since I couldn’t get the pictures to show the three states at once. There is also a picture of me drawing some wards around the base of the marker.
Do I get bonus points for listening to The Warded Man on my MP3 player while I was on my excursion? I think I am the only person to have read and listened to your book while standing in three states simulateously.
Again, thanks for writing such great stories. I have The Great Bazaar on order and cannot wait to receive it. I wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas and great success in the New Year.
Thanks,
Karen
I just sent Karen and Lizette’s books out this afternoon, FedEx Priority as promised, and they will be in the winners’ hands on Tuesday. The nearest FedEx Office to me is about 7 subway stops away at Jay Street. That’s about 5 miles from my house, and it was snowing heavily when I lift the store, so I decided, in homage to Karen’s great effort, that I would walk home.
I’m really glad I did. The snow was a light powder that was continually swept along the cold streets without sticking by the constant chill wind. It ran like smoke over the pavement in elegant waves to form drifts on the sides of the road, keeping the street clear. Everywhere people were slowing down to enjoy the beauty around them.
If it sticks, tomorrow we are teaching Cassie to make a snowman.
Have a good night, all. Keep sending in those DSAC entries, as I will give more copies away early in the new year. Everyone who has already entered is still in the running, so you know what you’re up against.
Good luck!

Congratulations Lynette and Karen! You really deserve it!
& how did the snowman thing work out?
The snow was powdery and bad for packing, and Cassie was afraid to touch it in any event. We’ll get there sooner or later.
It’ heeeeeere!!!!!!!!
