Daylight War Haiku Contest Winners

Tons of great haikus

Damn, my readers are so cool

Not enough prizes

I always love the haiku review contests, because the form gives a low bar of entry for people who don’t have a lot of free time, but can still come up with amazing results.

Of course, the entries pile up as a result, and sorting them all is a challenge. There were so many great poems it was really hard to narrow the number of winners down to something manageable. I’ve been reading them over and over, slowly culling, all morning. I think I have developed a rare medical condition, HIOH (Haiku-Induced Occular Hemorrhage).

Daylight War Pins

Two winners will receive signed Daylight War hardcovers. Ten runners up will receive Daylight War promo buttons.

Without further ado, here are the winners:

All ends with a crush

Battle lines are drawn.

Find Kaji’s true heir
by the Hora’s glowing throw
or just make him so?

Ral wrote seven haikus, one for each pillar of heaven. Here are my favorites:

In the new moon’s nights,
The foulest creatures arise,
Mind control their claws.

The Krasian warrior
And Par’chin, his ajin’pal,
The bones called them both.

The Song of Waning,
Its ancient power revived,
Kills demons in night!

Winners:

(to receive signed copies of Daylight War)

There were lots of amazing choices, but in the end, haiku is the art of simplicity, as Jason shows:

Sink full of Dishes
My fiancee yelling at me
Blame Demon Cycle

The other winner, Dan, really brought it to the contest, with over a dozen entries. Here’s just a sampling of my favorites:

Princes of the Court
Besiege the surface people.
The Consort commands!

When demons attack,
Resist! People large and small,
Deliverers all.

Renna, in the wild
Stealing power from demons
He won’t fight alone!

Brave Arlen Bales.
Some call him Deliverer;
He calls them the same.

Couzi grants courage
For those fighting the demons.
Tastes like cinnamon

Paper women cut
The pride of a great Cutter.
He’s no idiot!

Huge thanks to everyone who entered. Meg should be getting in touch with the winners shortly, but if you see your poem listed above and want to lend a hand, please email your mailing address to: contest@www.petervbrett.com

  2. I’m glad to see my haikus as a runner-ups even though there were some mistakes in them.

“Kills demons in night!” was originally “Kills demons in sight!”, but “sight” didn’t really make sense, as sound can travel beyond the field of one’s view. I decided to change it to “night” instead, but forgot to change “in” to “at”.
And “Mind control their claws.” lacks “‘s” after “control”, I think.

I also agree that the three haikus you mentioned were the best ones of the seven I posted.

Congrats to Dan and Jason! And the rest of runner-ups 🙂

What a fun way to interact with you AND your written works. I tried to resist adding punctuation, but in my head it reads as:
    The end, the end, noooooooooooo!!!!!!!
