New UK Audiobook Narrator Announced

As you may have heard, there was some dissatisfaction over my decision to switch the UK audiobook narration to Pete Bradbury, the US narrator, whose work I absolutely love. Many UK and AU listeners were jarred by the change, and wanted a switch back to Joyce, or at the very least, a narrator with a UK accent. While there was no drop in sales over the Bradbury version (quite the contrary), HarperVoyager UK agreed with the sentiment, and we began an exhaustive search over the course of the last six months to find the new UK/AU voice for the Demon Cycle. A couple times we were close, only to have an actor we liked unavailable.

But after much deliberation, I am pleased to announce that the new UK Audiobook narrator will be (drumroll please) …

Colin Mace! Colin’s got a lot of experience and a great voice to give the Demon Cycle life. He and I had a long skype session to discuss names, accents, and the overall tone of the books, and I am confident he will do an amazing job. He will be re-recording the entire series (including The Great Bazaar and Brayan’s Gold) from the very beginning and then continuing on with the remainder of the series.

Why am I so confident in Colin? Well, before he had even spoken to me, he hit it out of the park with his audition recording from The Desert Spear. Click play below to hear him read an excerpt from The Desert Spear.

Want to hear other samples of Colin Mace’s work? You can find a ton of them here. As soon as the recordings are available, I will make another announcement. Thank you for your patience.

Can’t wait? Check out the US audiobooks, narrated by Pete Bradbury, here or the incredible Graphic Audio versions voiced by a full cast.

  5. Thanks Peter, I’m looking forward to hearing the whole book narrated with a different atmosphere – I had to abandon the Daylight war narrated by Pete Bradbury after months of trying… only got 3rd way into the book before I lost interest completely – where as I’ve listened to the Warded man and the Desert spear narrated by Peter Joyce many times – what an adventure! I really hope Colin Mace’s narration can rekindle the fantasy…

  7. Hi Peter, I really enjoyed the Peter Joyce narrations of your wonderful saga but I fully appreciate why you are dissatisfied with his pronunciation of your creations. However, I’m sorry to say that Pete Bradbury’s voice and accent simply didn’t gel with me.

Soooo… are any dates available for the release of the new UK audiobook narrations by Colin Mace? Or have those plans been abandoned? I hope not as I’ve been clutching my credit card in anticipation for a fair few months now! Would progress be improved if Colin changed his first name to “Peter”?

  8. Hi Christiana, and everyone else waiting patiently.

The Colin Mace recordings are done and being edited. I have listened to short (15-20min) samples from each book and they are very very good. I am still waiting on full versions to listen to, but am assured they are coming shortly.

I expect they will be on sale soon!

  16. Wow! it’s been 6 months since i last revisited Arlen Bales – I finally finished Pete Bradbury’s narration of the Daylight War but sad to say… I don’t recall much of the 3rd story and the experience remains to leave a negative impact on me – unlike the first 2 books narrated by Peter Joyce which was a delightful entertainment experience (revisited many times).
After listening to the preview of Colin Mace narration i too, am excited about revisiting the story from a fresh perspective. I am eagerly awaiting its release….

    Kind regards
    Simon

  17. Hi all,

The Colin Mace audiobooks will be available starting October 23! The new audio recordings will include all three books, the novellas, and Colin Mace will be the voice of the U.K. Demon Cycle going forward. Peat has listened to all the audiobooks first, and everything has been approved!

The audible page hasn’t been updated with the new narrator, so it isn’t available for pre-order yet, but watch this space as October nears: http://www.audible.co.uk/search/ref=a_search_tseft?advsearchKeywords=Peter+V.+Brett&filterby=field-keywords&x=0&y=0

  24. Dear Mr Brett

Thank you for going to the trouble of re-recording new UK versions of the audio books. I feel you have been fair and generous to do so.

However I see that the new recordings are by Colin mace and not Peter Joyce. Could yourself or someone please explain to me WHY the new UK books haven’t been recorded with Peter Joyce? I can understand if he was unwilling or unavailable to record the new books and you had to meet a deadline therefore you went with a different narrator. I hope that either one of these issues is the reason why Peter Joyce wasn’t used.

I have inferred from your posts and responses that you seem to have grudge with Peter Joyce. If the reason he’s not being used on the re-recording is simple because you don’t like his reading, then thats just pathetic. All your readers want is Peter Joyce to continue. I really do hope that isn’t the case and I’m sure it isn’t.

I love your books and can’t wait to move on with the storey (as I couldn’t bare the Bradbury version) i am stuck on the second book. Ill be happy to buy and listen to the UK re-recordings (even though its not Peter Joyce) so long as there is a genuine reason he wasn’t used for the re-recordings.

If someone could please get back to me with a response as then I can move on with my life and enjoy your wonderful writing as I’m started to get frustrated.

Thank you very much, Kindest regards.

    Will

  25. Hi Will,

Here is the post detailing the reasons for the narrator switch: https://www.petervbrett.com/2013/04/12/demon-cycle-audiobooks/

And the UK books have a new narrator, you can listen to a sample here: https://www.petervbrett.com/2013/12/09/new-uk-audiobook-narrator-announced/
